How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 43 ÷ 100 = 0.43
  2. Multiply: 0.43 × 55 = 23.65
  3. Check: Work backwards: 23.65 ÷ 55 × 100 = 43%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 43/100 = part/55, so part = 43 × 55 ÷ 100 = 23.65. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =43%*55. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

23.65 is the 43% share of 55. The remaining 57% is 31.35, and the two parts add back up to 55.

Discounts: 43% off an item priced $55 saves $23.65, so you pay $31.35.

Adding and taking away 43%

Increasing 55 by 43% gives 78.65 and decreasing it by 43% gives 31.35. These do not cancel out: raising 55 by 43% and then lowering the result by 43% ends at 44.8305, because the second 43% is taken of a bigger number.
