How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 43 ÷ 100 = 0.43
  2. Multiply: 0.43 × 6 = 2.58
  3. Check: Work backwards: 2.58 ÷ 6 × 100 = 43%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 43/100 = part/6, so part = 43 × 6 ÷ 100 = 2.58. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =43%*6. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

2.58 is the 43% share of 6. The remaining 57% is 3.42, and the two parts add back up to 6.

Discounts: 43% off an item priced $6 saves $2.58, so you pay $3.42.

Adding and taking away 43%

Increasing 6 by 43% gives 8.58 and decreasing it by 43% gives 3.42. These do not cancel out: raising 6 by 43% and then lowering the result by 43% ends at 4.8906, because the second 43% is taken of a bigger number.
