How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 6 ÷ 100 = 0.06
  2. Multiply: 0.06 × 43 = 2.58
  3. Check: Work backwards: 2.58 ÷ 43 × 100 = 6%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 6/100 = part/43, so part = 6 × 43 ÷ 100 = 2.58. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =6%*43. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

2.58 is the 6% share of 43. The remaining 94% is 40.42, and the two parts add back up to 43.

Discounts: 6% off an item priced $43 saves $2.58, so you pay $40.42.

Adding and taking away 6%

Increasing 43 by 6% gives 45.58 and decreasing it by 6% gives 40.42. These do not cancel out: raising 43 by 6% and then lowering the result by 6% ends at 42.8452, because the second 6% is taken of a bigger number.
