How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 45 ÷ 100 = 0.45
  2. Multiply: 0.45 × 13 = 5.85
  3. Check: Work backwards: 5.85 ÷ 13 × 100 = 45%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 45/100 = part/13, so part = 45 × 13 ÷ 100 = 5.85. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =45%*13. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

5.85 is the 45% share of 13. The remaining 55% is 7.15, and the two parts add back up to 13.

Discounts: 45% off an item priced $13 saves $5.85, so you pay $7.15.

Adding and taking away 45%

Increasing 13 by 45% gives 18.85 and decreasing it by 45% gives 7.15. These do not cancel out: raising 13 by 45% and then lowering the result by 45% ends at 10.3675, because the second 45% is taken of a bigger number.
