How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 45 ÷ 100 = 0.45
  2. Multiply: 0.45 × 36 = 16.2
  3. Check: Work backwards: 16.2 ÷ 36 × 100 = 45%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 45/100 = part/36, so part = 45 × 36 ÷ 100 = 16.2. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =45%*36. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

16.2 is the 45% share of 36. The remaining 55% is 19.8, and the two parts add back up to 36.

Discounts: 45% off an item priced $36 saves $16.2, so you pay $19.8.

Adding and taking away 45%

Increasing 36 by 45% gives 52.2 and decreasing it by 45% gives 19.8. These do not cancel out: raising 36 by 45% and then lowering the result by 45% ends at 28.71, because the second 45% is taken of a bigger number.
