How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 45 ÷ 100 = 0.45
  2. Multiply: 0.45 × 58 = 26.1
  3. Check: Work backwards: 26.1 ÷ 58 × 100 = 45%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 45/100 = part/58, so part = 45 × 58 ÷ 100 = 26.1. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =45%*58. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

26.1 is the 45% share of 58. The remaining 55% is 31.9, and the two parts add back up to 58.

Discounts: 45% off an item priced $58 saves $26.1, so you pay $31.9.

Adding and taking away 45%

Increasing 58 by 45% gives 84.1 and decreasing it by 45% gives 31.9. These do not cancel out: raising 58 by 45% and then lowering the result by 45% ends at 46.255, because the second 45% is taken of a bigger number.
