How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 58 ÷ 100 = 0.58
  2. Multiply: 0.58 × 45 = 26.1
  3. Check: Work backwards: 26.1 ÷ 45 × 100 = 58%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 58/100 = part/45, so part = 58 × 45 ÷ 100 = 26.1. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =58%*45. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

26.1 is the 58% share of 45. The remaining 42% is 18.9, and the two parts add back up to 45.

Discounts: 58% off an item priced $45 saves $26.1, so you pay $18.9.

Adding and taking away 58%

Increasing 45 by 58% gives 71.1 and decreasing it by 58% gives 18.9. These do not cancel out: raising 45 by 58% and then lowering the result by 58% ends at 29.862, because the second 58% is taken of a bigger number.
