How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 75 ÷ 100 = 0.75
  2. Multiply: 0.75 × 60 = 45
  3. Check: Work backwards: 45 ÷ 60 × 100 = 75%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 75/100 = part/60, so part = 75 × 60 ÷ 100 = 45. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =75%*60. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

45 is the 75% share of 60. The remaining 25% is 15, and the two parts add back up to 60.

Discounts: 75% off an item priced $60 saves $45, so you pay $15.

Adding and taking away 75%

Increasing 60 by 75% gives 105 and decreasing it by 75% gives 15. These do not cancel out: raising 60 by 75% and then lowering the result by 75% ends at 26.25, because the second 75% is taken of a bigger number.
