How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 45 ÷ 100 = 0.45
  2. Multiply: 0.45 × 61 = 27.45
  3. Check: Work backwards: 27.45 ÷ 61 × 100 = 45%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 45/100 = part/61, so part = 45 × 61 ÷ 100 = 27.45. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =45%*61. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

27.45 is the 45% share of 61. The remaining 55% is 33.55, and the two parts add back up to 61.

Discounts: 45% off an item priced $61 saves $27.45, so you pay $33.55.

Adding and taking away 45%

Increasing 61 by 45% gives 88.45 and decreasing it by 45% gives 33.55. These do not cancel out: raising 61 by 45% and then lowering the result by 45% ends at 48.6475, because the second 45% is taken of a bigger number.
