How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 49 ÷ 100 = 0.49
  2. Multiply: 0.49 × 15 = 7.35
  3. Check: Work backwards: 7.35 ÷ 15 × 100 = 49%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 49/100 = part/15, so part = 49 × 15 ÷ 100 = 7.35. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =49%*15. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

7.35 is the 49% share of 15. The remaining 51% is 7.65, and the two parts add back up to 15.

Discounts: 49% off an item priced $15 saves $7.35, so you pay $7.65.

Adding and taking away 49%

Increasing 15 by 49% gives 22.35 and decreasing it by 49% gives 7.65. These do not cancel out: raising 15 by 49% and then lowering the result by 49% ends at 11.3985, because the second 49% is taken of a bigger number.
