How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 5 ÷ 100 = 0.05
- Multiply: 0.05 × 27 = 1.35
- Check: Work backwards: 1.35 ÷ 27 × 100 = 5%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 5/100 = part/27, so part = 5 × 27 ÷ 100 = 1.35. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =5%*27. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
1.35 is the 5% share of 27. The remaining 95% is 25.65, and the two parts add back up to 27.
Discounts: 5% off an item priced $27 saves $1.35, so you pay $25.65.
Adding and taking away 5%
Increasing 27 by 5% gives 28.35 and decreasing it by 5% gives 25.65. These do not cancel out: raising 27 by 5% and then lowering the result by 5% ends at 26.9325, because the second 5% is taken of a bigger number.
