How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 90 ÷ 100 = 0.9
  2. Multiply: 0.9 × 65 = 58.5
  3. Check: Work backwards: 58.5 ÷ 65 × 100 = 90%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 90/100 = part/65, so part = 90 × 65 ÷ 100 = 58.5. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =90%*65. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

58.5 is the 90% share of 65. The remaining 10% is 6.5, and the two parts add back up to 65.

Discounts: 90% off an item priced $65 saves $58.5, so you pay $6.5.

Adding and taking away 90%

Increasing 65 by 90% gives 123.5 and decreasing it by 90% gives 6.5. These do not cancel out: raising 65 by 90% and then lowering the result by 90% ends at 12.35, because the second 90% is taken of a bigger number.
