How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 50 ÷ 100 = 0.5
  2. Multiply: 0.5 × 7 = 3.5
  3. Check: Work backwards: 3.5 ÷ 7 × 100 = 50%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 50/100 = part/7, so part = 50 × 7 ÷ 100 = 3.5. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =50%*7. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

3.5 is the 50% share of 7. The remaining 50% is 3.5, and the two parts add back up to 7.

Discounts: 50% off an item priced $7 saves $3.5, so you pay $3.5.

Adding and taking away 50%

Increasing 7 by 50% gives 10.5 and decreasing it by 50% gives 3.5. These do not cancel out: raising 7 by 50% and then lowering the result by 50% ends at 5.25, because the second 50% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 7% of 50. 50% of 7 and 7% of 50 are always equal (both are 50 × 7 ÷ 100 = 3.5), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
