How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 51 ÷ 100 = 0.51
  2. Multiply: 0.51 × 51 = 26.01
  3. Check: Work backwards: 26.01 ÷ 51 × 100 = 51%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 51/100 = part/51, so part = 51 × 51 ÷ 100 = 26.01. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =51%*51. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

26.01 is the 51% share of 51. The remaining 49% is 24.99, and the two parts add back up to 51.

Discounts: 51% off an item priced $51 saves $26.01, so you pay $24.99.

Adding and taking away 51%

Increasing 51 by 51% gives 77.01 and decreasing it by 51% gives 24.99. These do not cancel out: raising 51 by 51% and then lowering the result by 51% ends at 37.7349, because the second 51% is taken of a bigger number.
