How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 51 ÷ 100 = 0.51
  2. Multiply: 0.51 × 53 = 27.03
  3. Check: Work backwards: 27.03 ÷ 53 × 100 = 51%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 51/100 = part/53, so part = 51 × 53 ÷ 100 = 27.03. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =51%*53. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

27.03 is the 51% share of 53. The remaining 49% is 25.97, and the two parts add back up to 53.

Discounts: 51% off an item priced $53 saves $27.03, so you pay $25.97.

Adding and taking away 51%

Increasing 53 by 51% gives 80.03 and decreasing it by 51% gives 25.97. These do not cancel out: raising 53 by 51% and then lowering the result by 51% ends at 39.2147, because the second 51% is taken of a bigger number.
