How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 52 ÷ 100 = 0.52
  2. Multiply: 0.52 × 22 = 11.44
  3. Check: Work backwards: 11.44 ÷ 22 × 100 = 52%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 52/100 = part/22, so part = 52 × 22 ÷ 100 = 11.44. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =52%*22. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

11.44 is the 52% share of 22. The remaining 48% is 10.56, and the two parts add back up to 22.

Discounts: 52% off an item priced $22 saves $11.44, so you pay $10.56.

Adding and taking away 52%

Increasing 22 by 52% gives 33.44 and decreasing it by 52% gives 10.56. These do not cancel out: raising 22 by 52% and then lowering the result by 52% ends at 16.0512, because the second 52% is taken of a bigger number.
