How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 10 ÷ 100 = 0.1
- Multiply: 0.1 × 250 = 25
- Check: Work backwards: 25 ÷ 250 × 100 = 10%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 10/100 = part/250, so part = 10 × 250 ÷ 100 = 25. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =10%*250. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
25 is the 10% share of 250. The remaining 90% is 225, and the two parts add back up to 250.
Discounts: 10% off an item priced $250 saves $25, so you pay $225.
Adding and taking away 10%
Increasing 250 by 10% gives 275 and decreasing it by 10% gives 225. These do not cancel out: raising 250 by 10% and then lowering the result by 10% ends at 247.5, because the second 10% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 250% of 10. 10% of 250 and 250% of 10 are always equal (both are 10 × 250 ÷ 100 = 25), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
