How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 52 ÷ 100 = 0.52
  2. Multiply: 0.52 × 31 = 16.12
  3. Check: Work backwards: 16.12 ÷ 31 × 100 = 52%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 52/100 = part/31, so part = 52 × 31 ÷ 100 = 16.12. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =52%*31. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

16.12 is the 52% share of 31. The remaining 48% is 14.88, and the two parts add back up to 31.

Discounts: 52% off an item priced $31 saves $16.12, so you pay $14.88.

Adding and taking away 52%

Increasing 31 by 52% gives 47.12 and decreasing it by 52% gives 14.88. These do not cancel out: raising 31 by 52% and then lowering the result by 52% ends at 22.6176, because the second 52% is taken of a bigger number.
