How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 52 ÷ 100 = 0.52
  2. Multiply: 0.52 × 45 = 23.4
  3. Check: Work backwards: 23.4 ÷ 45 × 100 = 52%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 52/100 = part/45, so part = 52 × 45 ÷ 100 = 23.4. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =52%*45. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

23.4 is the 52% share of 45. The remaining 48% is 21.6, and the two parts add back up to 45.

Discounts: 52% off an item priced $45 saves $23.4, so you pay $21.6.

Adding and taking away 52%

Increasing 45 by 52% gives 68.4 and decreasing it by 52% gives 21.6. These do not cancel out: raising 45 by 52% and then lowering the result by 52% ends at 32.832, because the second 52% is taken of a bigger number.
