How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 58 ÷ 100 = 0.58
  2. Multiply: 0.58 × 25 = 14.5
  3. Check: Work backwards: 14.5 ÷ 25 × 100 = 58%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 58/100 = part/25, so part = 58 × 25 ÷ 100 = 14.5. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =58%*25. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

14.5 is the 58% share of 25. The remaining 42% is 10.5, and the two parts add back up to 25.

Discounts: 58% off an item priced $25 saves $14.5, so you pay $10.5.

Adding and taking away 58%

Increasing 25 by 58% gives 39.5 and decreasing it by 58% gives 10.5. These do not cancel out: raising 25 by 58% and then lowering the result by 58% ends at 16.59, because the second 58% is taken of a bigger number.
