How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 59 ÷ 100 = 0.59
  2. Multiply: 0.59 × 3 = 1.77
  3. Check: Work backwards: 1.77 ÷ 3 × 100 = 59%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 59/100 = part/3, so part = 59 × 3 ÷ 100 = 1.77. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =59%*3. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

1.77 is the 59% share of 3. The remaining 41% is 1.23, and the two parts add back up to 3.

Discounts: 59% off an item priced $3 saves $1.77, so you pay $1.23.

Adding and taking away 59%

Increasing 3 by 59% gives 4.77 and decreasing it by 59% gives 1.23. These do not cancel out: raising 3 by 59% and then lowering the result by 59% ends at 1.9557, because the second 59% is taken of a bigger number.
