How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 3 ÷ 100 = 0.03
  2. Multiply: 0.03 × 59 = 1.77
  3. Check: Work backwards: 1.77 ÷ 59 × 100 = 3%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 3/100 = part/59, so part = 3 × 59 ÷ 100 = 1.77. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =3%*59. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

1.77 is the 3% share of 59. The remaining 97% is 57.23, and the two parts add back up to 59.

Discounts: 3% off an item priced $59 saves $1.77, so you pay $57.23.

Adding and taking away 3%

Increasing 59 by 3% gives 60.77 and decreasing it by 3% gives 57.23. These do not cancel out: raising 59 by 3% and then lowering the result by 3% ends at 58.9469, because the second 3% is taken of a bigger number.
