How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 6 ÷ 100 = 0.06
- Multiply: 0.06 × 3 = 0.18
- Check: Work backwards: 0.18 ÷ 3 × 100 = 6%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 6/100 = part/3, so part = 6 × 3 ÷ 100 = 0.18. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =6%*3. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
