How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 60 ÷ 100 = 0.6
  2. Multiply: 0.6 × 1 = 0.6
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.6 ÷ 1 × 100 = 60%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 60/100 = part/1, so part = 60 × 1 ÷ 100 = 0.6. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =60%*1. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.6 is the 60% share of 1. The remaining 40% is 0.4, and the two parts add back up to 1.

Discounts: 60% off an item priced $1 saves $0.6, so you pay $0.4.

Adding and taking away 60%

Increasing 1 by 60% gives 1.6 and decreasing it by 60% gives 0.4. These do not cancel out: raising 1 by 60% and then lowering the result by 60% ends at 0.64, because the second 60% is taken of a bigger number.
