How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 1 ÷ 100 = 0.01
  2. Multiply: 0.01 × 60 = 0.6
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.6 ÷ 60 × 100 = 1%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 1/100 = part/60, so part = 1 × 60 ÷ 100 = 0.6. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =1%*60. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.6 is the 1% share of 60. The remaining 99% is 59.4, and the two parts add back up to 60.

Discounts: 1% off an item priced $60 saves $0.6, so you pay $59.4.

Adding and taking away 1%

Increasing 60 by 1% gives 60.6 and decreasing it by 1% gives 59.4. These do not cancel out: raising 60 by 1% and then lowering the result by 1% ends at 59.994, because the second 1% is taken of a bigger number.
