How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 60 ÷ 100 = 0.6
- Multiply: 0.6 × 13 = 7.8
- Check: Work backwards: 7.8 ÷ 13 × 100 = 60%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 60/100 = part/13, so part = 60 × 13 ÷ 100 = 7.8. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =60%*13. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
7.8 is the 60% share of 13. The remaining 40% is 5.2, and the two parts add back up to 13.
Discounts: 60% off an item priced $13 saves $7.8, so you pay $5.2.
Adding and taking away 60%
Increasing 13 by 60% gives 20.8 and decreasing it by 60% gives 5.2. These do not cancel out: raising 13 by 60% and then lowering the result by 60% ends at 8.32, because the second 60% is taken of a bigger number.
