How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 13 ÷ 100 = 0.13
  2. Multiply: 0.13 × 60 = 7.8
  3. Check: Work backwards: 7.8 ÷ 60 × 100 = 13%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 13/100 = part/60, so part = 13 × 60 ÷ 100 = 7.8. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =13%*60. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

7.8 is the 13% share of 60. The remaining 87% is 52.2, and the two parts add back up to 60.

Discounts: 13% off an item priced $60 saves $7.8, so you pay $52.2.

Adding and taking away 13%

Increasing 60 by 13% gives 67.8 and decreasing it by 13% gives 52.2. These do not cancel out: raising 60 by 13% and then lowering the result by 13% ends at 58.986, because the second 13% is taken of a bigger number.
