How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 60 ÷ 100 = 0.6
  2. Multiply: 0.6 × 32 = 19.2
  3. Check: Work backwards: 19.2 ÷ 32 × 100 = 60%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 60/100 = part/32, so part = 60 × 32 ÷ 100 = 19.2. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =60%*32. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

19.2 is the 60% share of 32. The remaining 40% is 12.8, and the two parts add back up to 32.

Discounts: 60% off an item priced $32 saves $19.2, so you pay $12.8.

Adding and taking away 60%

Increasing 32 by 60% gives 51.2 and decreasing it by 60% gives 12.8. These do not cancel out: raising 32 by 60% and then lowering the result by 60% ends at 20.48, because the second 60% is taken of a bigger number.
