How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 32 ÷ 100 = 0.32
  2. Multiply: 0.32 × 60 = 19.2
  3. Check: Work backwards: 19.2 ÷ 60 × 100 = 32%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 32/100 = part/60, so part = 32 × 60 ÷ 100 = 19.2. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =32%*60. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

19.2 is the 32% share of 60. The remaining 68% is 40.8, and the two parts add back up to 60.

Discounts: 32% off an item priced $60 saves $19.2, so you pay $40.8.

Adding and taking away 32%

Increasing 60 by 32% gives 79.2 and decreasing it by 32% gives 40.8. These do not cancel out: raising 60 by 32% and then lowering the result by 32% ends at 53.856, because the second 32% is taken of a bigger number.
