How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 60 ÷ 100 = 0.6
  2. Multiply: 0.6 × 53 = 31.8
  3. Check: Work backwards: 31.8 ÷ 53 × 100 = 60%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 60/100 = part/53, so part = 60 × 53 ÷ 100 = 31.8. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =60%*53. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

31.8 is the 60% share of 53. The remaining 40% is 21.2, and the two parts add back up to 53.

Discounts: 60% off an item priced $53 saves $31.8, so you pay $21.2.

Adding and taking away 60%

Increasing 53 by 60% gives 84.8 and decreasing it by 60% gives 21.2. These do not cancel out: raising 53 by 60% and then lowering the result by 60% ends at 33.92, because the second 60% is taken of a bigger number.
