How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 63 ÷ 100 = 0.63
- Multiply: 0.63 × 2 = 1.26
- Check: Work backwards: 1.26 ÷ 2 × 100 = 63%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 63/100 = part/2, so part = 63 × 2 ÷ 100 = 1.26. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =63%*2. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
1.26 is the 63% share of 2. The remaining 37% is 0.74, and the two parts add back up to 2.
Discounts: 63% off an item priced $2 saves $1.26, so you pay $0.74.
Adding and taking away 63%
Increasing 2 by 63% gives 3.26 and decreasing it by 63% gives 0.74. These do not cancel out: raising 2 by 63% and then lowering the result by 63% ends at 1.2062, because the second 63% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 2% of 63. 63% of 2 and 2% of 63 are always equal (both are 63 × 2 ÷ 100 = 1.26), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
