How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 64 ÷ 100 = 0.64
  2. Multiply: 0.64 × 25 = 16
  3. Check: Work backwards: 16 ÷ 25 × 100 = 64%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 64/100 = part/25, so part = 64 × 25 ÷ 100 = 16. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =64%*25. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

16 is the 64% share of 25. The remaining 36% is 9, and the two parts add back up to 25.

Discounts: 64% off an item priced $25 saves $16, so you pay $9.

Adding and taking away 64%

Increasing 25 by 64% gives 41 and decreasing it by 64% gives 9. These do not cancel out: raising 25 by 64% and then lowering the result by 64% ends at 14.76, because the second 64% is taken of a bigger number.
