How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 25 ÷ 100 = 0.25
  2. Multiply: 0.25 × 64 = 16
  3. Check: Work backwards: 16 ÷ 64 × 100 = 25%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 25/100 = part/64, so part = 25 × 64 ÷ 100 = 16. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =25%*64. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

16 is the 25% share of 64. The remaining 75% is 48, and the two parts add back up to 64.

Discounts: 25% off an item priced $64 saves $16, so you pay $48.

Adding and taking away 25%

Increasing 64 by 25% gives 80 and decreasing it by 25% gives 48. These do not cancel out: raising 64 by 25% and then lowering the result by 25% ends at 60, because the second 25% is taken of a bigger number.
