How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 65 ÷ 100 = 0.65
  2. Multiply: 0.65 × 41 = 26.65
  3. Check: Work backwards: 26.65 ÷ 41 × 100 = 65%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 65/100 = part/41, so part = 65 × 41 ÷ 100 = 26.65. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =65%*41. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

26.65 is the 65% share of 41. The remaining 35% is 14.35, and the two parts add back up to 41.

Discounts: 65% off an item priced $41 saves $26.65, so you pay $14.35.

Adding and taking away 65%

Increasing 41 by 65% gives 67.65 and decreasing it by 65% gives 14.35. These do not cancel out: raising 41 by 65% and then lowering the result by 65% ends at 23.6775, because the second 65% is taken of a bigger number.
