How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 65 ÷ 100 = 0.65
  2. Multiply: 0.65 × 6 = 3.9
  3. Check: Work backwards: 3.9 ÷ 6 × 100 = 65%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 65/100 = part/6, so part = 65 × 6 ÷ 100 = 3.9. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =65%*6. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

3.9 is the 65% share of 6. The remaining 35% is 2.1, and the two parts add back up to 6.

Discounts: 65% off an item priced $6 saves $3.9, so you pay $2.1.

Adding and taking away 65%

Increasing 6 by 65% gives 9.9 and decreasing it by 65% gives 2.1. These do not cancel out: raising 6 by 65% and then lowering the result by 65% ends at 3.465, because the second 65% is taken of a bigger number.
