How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 6 ÷ 100 = 0.06
- Multiply: 0.06 × 65 = 3.9
- Check: Work backwards: 3.9 ÷ 65 × 100 = 6%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 6/100 = part/65, so part = 6 × 65 ÷ 100 = 3.9. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =6%*65. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
3.9 is the 6% share of 65. The remaining 94% is 61.1, and the two parts add back up to 65.
Discounts: 6% off an item priced $65 saves $3.9, so you pay $61.1.
Adding and taking away 6%
Increasing 65 by 6% gives 68.9 and decreasing it by 6% gives 61.1. These do not cancel out: raising 65 by 6% and then lowering the result by 6% ends at 64.766, because the second 6% is taken of a bigger number.
