How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 10 ÷ 100 = 0.1
- Multiply: 0.1 × 200 = 20
- Check: Work backwards: 20 ÷ 200 × 100 = 10%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 10/100 = part/200, so part = 10 × 200 ÷ 100 = 20. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =10%*200. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
20 is the 10% share of 200. The remaining 90% is 180, and the two parts add back up to 200.
Discounts: 10% off an item priced $200 saves $20, so you pay $180.
Adding and taking away 10%
Increasing 200 by 10% gives 220 and decreasing it by 10% gives 180. These do not cancel out: raising 200 by 10% and then lowering the result by 10% ends at 198, because the second 10% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 200% of 10. 10% of 200 and 200% of 10 are always equal (both are 10 × 200 ÷ 100 = 20), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
