How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 7 ÷ 100 = 0.07
  2. Multiply: 0.07 × 23 = 1.61
  3. Check: Work backwards: 1.61 ÷ 23 × 100 = 7%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 7/100 = part/23, so part = 7 × 23 ÷ 100 = 1.61. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =7%*23. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

1.61 is the 7% share of 23. The remaining 93% is 21.39, and the two parts add back up to 23.

Discounts: 7% off an item priced $23 saves $1.61, so you pay $21.39.

Adding and taking away 7%

Increasing 23 by 7% gives 24.61 and decreasing it by 7% gives 21.39. These do not cancel out: raising 23 by 7% and then lowering the result by 7% ends at 22.8873, because the second 7% is taken of a bigger number.
