How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 70 ÷ 100 = 0.7
- Multiply: 0.7 × 12 = 8.4
- Check: Work backwards: 8.4 ÷ 12 × 100 = 70%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 70/100 = part/12, so part = 70 × 12 ÷ 100 = 8.4. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =70%*12. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
8.4 is the 70% share of 12. The remaining 30% is 3.6, and the two parts add back up to 12.
Discounts: 70% off an item priced $12 saves $8.4, so you pay $3.6.
Adding and taking away 70%
Increasing 12 by 70% gives 20.4 and decreasing it by 70% gives 3.6. These do not cancel out: raising 12 by 70% and then lowering the result by 70% ends at 6.12, because the second 70% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 12% of 70. 70% of 12 and 12% of 70 are always equal (both are 70 × 12 ÷ 100 = 8.4), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
