How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 70 ÷ 100 = 0.7
  2. Multiply: 0.7 × 14 = 9.8
  3. Check: Work backwards: 9.8 ÷ 14 × 100 = 70%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 70/100 = part/14, so part = 70 × 14 ÷ 100 = 9.8. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =70%*14. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

9.8 is the 70% share of 14. The remaining 30% is 4.2, and the two parts add back up to 14.

Discounts: 70% off an item priced $14 saves $9.8, so you pay $4.2.

Adding and taking away 70%

Increasing 14 by 70% gives 23.8 and decreasing it by 70% gives 4.2. These do not cancel out: raising 14 by 70% and then lowering the result by 70% ends at 7.14, because the second 70% is taken of a bigger number.
