How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 5 ÷ 100 = 0.05
  2. Multiply: 0.05 × 400 = 20
  3. Check: Work backwards: 20 ÷ 400 × 100 = 5%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 5/100 = part/400, so part = 5 × 400 ÷ 100 = 20. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =5%*400. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

20 is the 5% share of 400. The remaining 95% is 380, and the two parts add back up to 400.

Discounts: 5% off an item priced $400 saves $20, so you pay $380.

Adding and taking away 5%

Increasing 400 by 5% gives 420 and decreasing it by 5% gives 380. These do not cancel out: raising 400 by 5% and then lowering the result by 5% ends at 399, because the second 5% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 400% of 5. 5% of 400 and 400% of 5 are always equal (both are 5 × 400 ÷ 100 = 20), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
