How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 70 ÷ 100 = 0.7
  2. Multiply: 0.7 × 63 = 44.1
  3. Check: Work backwards: 44.1 ÷ 63 × 100 = 70%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 70/100 = part/63, so part = 70 × 63 ÷ 100 = 44.1. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =70%*63. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

44.1 is the 70% share of 63. The remaining 30% is 18.9, and the two parts add back up to 63.

Discounts: 70% off an item priced $63 saves $44.1, so you pay $18.9.

Adding and taking away 70%

Increasing 63 by 70% gives 107.1 and decreasing it by 70% gives 18.9. These do not cancel out: raising 63 by 70% and then lowering the result by 70% ends at 32.13, because the second 70% is taken of a bigger number.
