How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 78 ÷ 100 = 0.78
  2. Multiply: 0.78 × 50 = 39
  3. Check: Work backwards: 39 ÷ 50 × 100 = 78%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 78/100 = part/50, so part = 78 × 50 ÷ 100 = 39. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =78%*50. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

39 is the 78% share of 50. The remaining 22% is 11, and the two parts add back up to 50.

Discounts: 78% off an item priced $50 saves $39, so you pay $11.

Adding and taking away 78%

Increasing 50 by 78% gives 89 and decreasing it by 78% gives 11. These do not cancel out: raising 50 by 78% and then lowering the result by 78% ends at 19.58, because the second 78% is taken of a bigger number.
