How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 8 ÷ 100 = 0.08
  2. Multiply: 0.08 × 35 = 2.8
  3. Check: Work backwards: 2.8 ÷ 35 × 100 = 8%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 8/100 = part/35, so part = 8 × 35 ÷ 100 = 2.8. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =8%*35. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

2.8 is the 8% share of 35. The remaining 92% is 32.2, and the two parts add back up to 35.

Discounts: 8% off an item priced $35 saves $2.8, so you pay $32.2.

Adding and taking away 8%

Increasing 35 by 8% gives 37.8 and decreasing it by 8% gives 32.2. These do not cancel out: raising 35 by 8% and then lowering the result by 8% ends at 34.776, because the second 8% is taken of a bigger number.
