How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 8 ÷ 100 = 0.08
- Multiply: 0.08 × 6 = 0.48
- Check: Work backwards: 0.48 ÷ 6 × 100 = 8%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 8/100 = part/6, so part = 8 × 6 ÷ 100 = 0.48. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =8%*6. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
0.48 is the 8% share of 6. The remaining 92% is 5.52, and the two parts add back up to 6.
Discounts: 8% off an item priced $6 saves $0.48, so you pay $5.52.
Adding and taking away 8%
Increasing 6 by 8% gives 6.48 and decreasing it by 8% gives 5.52. These do not cancel out: raising 6 by 8% and then lowering the result by 8% ends at 5.9616, because the second 8% is taken of a bigger number.
