How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 6 ÷ 100 = 0.06
  2. Multiply: 0.06 × 8 = 0.48
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.48 ÷ 8 × 100 = 6%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 6/100 = part/8, so part = 6 × 8 ÷ 100 = 0.48. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =6%*8. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.48 is the 6% share of 8. The remaining 94% is 7.52, and the two parts add back up to 8.

Discounts: 6% off an item priced $8 saves $0.48, so you pay $7.52.

Adding and taking away 6%

Increasing 8 by 6% gives 8.48 and decreasing it by 6% gives 7.52. These do not cancel out: raising 8 by 6% and then lowering the result by 6% ends at 7.9712, because the second 6% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 8% of 6. 6% of 8 and 8% of 6 are always equal (both are 6 × 8 ÷ 100 = 0.48), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
