How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 80 ÷ 100 = 0.8
- Multiply: 0.8 × 32 = 25.6
- Check: Work backwards: 25.6 ÷ 32 × 100 = 80%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 80/100 = part/32, so part = 80 × 32 ÷ 100 = 25.6. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =80%*32. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
25.6 is the 80% share of 32. The remaining 20% is 6.4, and the two parts add back up to 32.
Discounts: 80% off an item priced $32 saves $25.6, so you pay $6.4.
Adding and taking away 80%
Increasing 32 by 80% gives 57.6 and decreasing it by 80% gives 6.4. These do not cancel out: raising 32 by 80% and then lowering the result by 80% ends at 11.52, because the second 80% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 32% of 80. 80% of 32 and 32% of 80 are always equal (both are 80 × 32 ÷ 100 = 25.6), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
