How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 80 ÷ 100 = 0.8
  2. Multiply: 0.8 × 84 = 67.2
  3. Check: Work backwards: 67.2 ÷ 84 × 100 = 80%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 80/100 = part/84, so part = 80 × 84 ÷ 100 = 67.2. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =80%*84. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

67.2 is the 80% share of 84. The remaining 20% is 16.8, and the two parts add back up to 84.

Discounts: 80% off an item priced $84 saves $67.2, so you pay $16.8.

Adding and taking away 80%

Increasing 84 by 80% gives 151.2 and decreasing it by 80% gives 16.8. These do not cancel out: raising 84 by 80% and then lowering the result by 80% ends at 30.24, because the second 80% is taken of a bigger number.
