How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 80 ÷ 100 = 0.8
  2. Multiply: 0.8 × 9 = 7.2
  3. Check: Work backwards: 7.2 ÷ 9 × 100 = 80%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 80/100 = part/9, so part = 80 × 9 ÷ 100 = 7.2. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =80%*9. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

7.2 is the 80% share of 9. The remaining 20% is 1.8, and the two parts add back up to 9.

Discounts: 80% off an item priced $9 saves $7.2, so you pay $1.8.

Adding and taking away 80%

Increasing 9 by 80% gives 16.2 and decreasing it by 80% gives 1.8. These do not cancel out: raising 9 by 80% and then lowering the result by 80% ends at 3.24, because the second 80% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 9% of 80. 80% of 9 and 9% of 80 are always equal (both are 80 × 9 ÷ 100 = 7.2), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
