How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 9 ÷ 100 = 0.09
- Multiply: 0.09 × 80 = 7.2
- Check: Work backwards: 7.2 ÷ 80 × 100 = 9%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 9/100 = part/80, so part = 9 × 80 ÷ 100 = 7.2. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =9%*80. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
7.2 is the 9% share of 80. The remaining 91% is 72.8, and the two parts add back up to 80.
Discounts: 9% off an item priced $80 saves $7.2, so you pay $72.8.
Adding and taking away 9%
Increasing 80 by 9% gives 87.2 and decreasing it by 9% gives 72.8. These do not cancel out: raising 80 by 9% and then lowering the result by 9% ends at 79.352, because the second 9% is taken of a bigger number.
